Argentine Fans Against Messi

Argentine fans appear to be disgusted with their own football prodigy following his 4 goal effort for Barcelona FC in the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal.

Well, sort of.

In the same way that Brazil fans would never get off Ronaldinho's back about his lack of producation for the national team when he was tearing it up for his European club teams, Messi's detractors say that he isn't the same player when he competes at the international level.
"Argentine fans believe there are two Messis," newspaper La Nacion said. "One in Barcelona who plays outstandingly well, who dribbles and makes things happen; and one in the national side who can't develop his full potential, who seems to drag that magical left foot behind him and loses the ball, who shoots and scores only occasionally."
Some in Argentina blame Messi's lack of production on the international front on the legendary Argentine player and Argentine Coach Diego Maradon who plays a quick counterattacking system as opposed to the famed Barcelona possession strategy that seems to work so well for Messi.

Whether there are two Messis or not, it doesn't seem to me to be entirely his fault.

I highly doubt an athlete of his caliber would consciously play worse for one team or another, especially considering that "other team" is one as storied as La Albiceleste.

Your theory attributing the phenomenon to the incompatibility of Messi's playing style and Maradona's game strategy seems like a fair assessment of the situation to me.
